If you could just name one example of something fabulous that EDL has done for your property what would it be?

Charlie Henley

  1. How long have you been an EDL client?
    Since 2000
  2. What do you look for in a landscape company for your property(ies)?
Somebody knowledgeable who can demonstrate it by; talking about their experiences they’ve had and properties they’ve maintained; someone who knows plant materials and what will thrive in certain conditions; someone who is responsive and can anticipate your needs before you know you need them!
  3. Why did you choose Environmental Design Landscape?
I knew Mark by reputation and knew others in the industry who I respected that were using him. He took me out to some properties and demonstrated what they did; he was also the least expensive.
  4. Can you describe the daily or weekly activities EDL performs on your properties?
Soup to nuts; keeping beds weeded, mowing, installation, removing failed plant materials, working on irrigation systems. EDL has people who have fixed water leaks and storm issues.
  5. What do they do to stand out above their competitors?
Mark is the most knowledgeable I’ve talked to about plant material in the industry. The responsiveness of their people is above what I’ve ever experienced with others. They do what they say they will do. There are other good landscapers, but they are at the top of the list! Their prices are reasonable too.
  6. If you could just name one example of something fabulous that EDL has done for your property(ies?) what would it be?
Arbor Glen was a new property about five years ago and the installation was a mess. We then had to do a major rework with all new plant materials. We solicited bids and EDL was chosen. Now the property looks great, the plant material has matured and it looks like a market rate community even though its low income. They have helped Crosland’s ability to deliver top quality developments!
  7. What else would you want people to know about EDL?
Mark is a good businessman and an honest guy. I’d never hesitate to take his advice.

  1. How long have you been an EDL client?
    Since 1986 or so
  2. What do you look for in a landscape company for your property(ies)?
Cost is certainly an issue, service and relationship.  It is the largest single expense we have, so there has to be trust.
  3. Why did you choose Environmental Design Landscape?
We priced them out and had always felt that Mark was responsive.  He has reliable men and reliable equipment.  He never tells me that my properties cannot be mowed!
  4. Can you describe the daily or weekly activities EDL performs on your properties?
Weekly – they cut the grass, blow and prune the shrubs.  When they see trash, they pick it  up, which is just terrific! They look out for my liability issues, things such as low lying limbs.  EDL is responsible for at least 50% of my curb appeal!
  5. What do they do to stand out above their competitors?
Their prices are fair and we have a good relationship between the foreman and the onsite property manager.  They are super responsive to issues or complaints.  They’ve helped us with water leaks and drainage issues.  As soon as we get approval on a project, they’re there to take care of it.
  6. If you could just name one example of something fabulous that EDL has done for your property(ies?) what would it be?
On an older property, EDL pulled out all the old stuff and took years off the property!
  7. What else would you want people to know about EDL?
With EDL, you get what you pay for.  If they say 600 bales of hay, that’s what you get; you wouldn’t want to have to count them and with EDL you don’t have to.

  1. How long have you been an EDL client?
Since 2001 and before at the site level
  2. What do you look for in a landscape company for your property(ies)?
Quality, price and service.  We like to do business with companies that are stable and focus on apartment landscaping.  We have had sour experiences with commercial/multi-family landscapers, finding that the commercial work takes precedence.
  3. Why did you choose Environmental Design Landscape?
They had a better level of service and a better understanding of our needs.  We had a really good relationship with Mark; he was always easy to work with, so it was a no-brainer to give them a try.
  4. Can you describe the daily or weekly activities EDL performs on your properties?
Mow, weed, edge, remove leaves, irrigation repairs – seasonally, they do the flowers.  They are very good at recommending what should be planted.  Also they do fall seeding, aerating, deal with pesticide issues and bug issues.  Anything we need in between, they are always there when we need them.  They are very responsive cleaning up storm damage or when somebody’s car jumps a curb.
  5. What do they do to stand out above their competitors?
They are very involved in our apartment association, which is hugely important to us.  All their people are very professional and seem to take more ownership in what they do.  A lot of times, frontline workers seem to care more about just collecting their paychecks – no so with EDL.

Also, each property’s account manager checks in with the office and does ongoing quality control.
  6. If you could just name one example of something fabulous that EDL has done for your property(ies?) what would it be?
We brought EDL on for a tax credit property.  Their cost was incremental, but they made a huge difference, almost overnight!  Residents were stopping by to rave about it.
  7. What else would you want people to know about EDL?
The pride they take in what they do and their vast array of knowledge.  They take the time to go to the seminars and read the books.  Mark understands our side of the business; he pulls lunches together with different people in the industry to share ideas.

NOTES TO MARK:  Other things that Mindy mentioned are as follows:

  • I hope they don’t go in the direction where they don’t want to do multi-family anymore.
  • It seems people are moving away from multi-family (Bud’s) (Mark, is this an increased opportunity for EDL?)
  • Also Smith’s is not as focused as they have been in the past.

  1. How long have you been an EDL client?
7 years; they seem like family to me.  I trust everything they say!
  2. What do you look for in a landscape company for your property(ies)?
There has to be a level of trust.  Of course they have to be able to do the job.  We need creativity, ability to provide good product.  Reliability is important.  Sometimes they have to be here on the spot for an emergency and they always are!
  3. Why did you choose Environmental Design Landscape?
I inherited them with the job, but was immediately impressed with their professionalism.  They really stepped up to the plate and they are always there!
  4. Can you describe the daily or weekly activities EDL performs on your properties?
Blow, pick up all the trash, including the cigarette butts (some people won’t do that), weed eat, mow, edge, trim back areas that need pruning.  They do great edging with a hard edge that really stands up.
  5. What do they do to stand out above their competitors?
They treat you as if you’re always first; that’s just the way they are.  You know you’re given the team that’s best suited to your property.  Everything always looks fresh, clean and crisp.  The properties always stand out with crisp, lush turf.
  6. If you could just name one example of something fabulous that EDL has done for your property(ies?) what would it be?
They have pulled me through inspections; making me and my properties look the best. (The previous sentence is good to know, but not for attribution.)  In time of need, they drop what they’re doing to help us out.  For example, a car ran over a flowerbed at the entrance and they were right there to replace it with fresh beautiful flowers.
  7. What else would you want people to know about EDL?
They are competitive in their pricing.  If you don’t know what to do with your properties, they will come up with ideas to make it stand out.
